Bornholms Growth Forum formulated an Energy Strategy as a means to generate growth and create more jobs on Bornholm via green energy. At the same time, the Energy Strategy bridges the gap between the Danish Government's forthcomming Business Climate Strategy, and its commitment to "Green Growth", and the energy strategy of the Regional Municipality of Bornholm, which aims to implement more green energy on the island and, at the same time, phase out the use of fossil fuels for geopolitical and other reasons.

The interests of Bornholm's Growth Forum in green energy and green growth are implemented in the "Green Energy" action area of the business development strategy "Unique Bornholm - Growth via Creativity and Quality, 2007 - 2010" and in various projects. The Growth Forum's primary aim is long term - the Energy Strategy must underpin the Branding Strategy vision entitled "Gright Green Island 2014".

The Growth Forum's Energy Strategy is based on three main action areas:

* Bright Green Citizen: Citizen-focused activities

* Bright Green Industry: Activities focusing on tradesmen, business and industry

* Bright Green Engineering: Activities focusing on knowledge-based enterprises

The ideas for new initiatives are very likely to arise in the individual action areas, but the actual development and maturation of new products will take place where ideas interface with practical implementation.

An energy cluster, Bornholm's Growth Forum and the Regional Municipality of Bornholm operate where the three main action areas overlap. Here, projects of a more interdiciplinary nature, e.g. expansion of the experiment with electric cars and the powering of their batteries with surplus energy, will be able to operate.

- The path to an Even More Sustainable Bornholm 2025 Energy Strategy for Bornholm

The Energy Strategy of the Regional Municipality of Bornholm, was prepared as a part of Bornholm's involvement in "Transplan", an ongoing energy project supported by the European Community. The project was initiated under the auspices of B7, which is an international collaborative effort involving seven islands in the Baltic Sea, one of which is Bornholm.

The 2025 Energy Strategy for Bornholm envisions turning Bornholm into a carbon-neutral society based on sustainable and renewable energy by 2025.

To achieve the goal for Bornholm to be even more sustainable 2025, there are focus on twelwe areas of action:

1) More and cleaner district heating in towns and villages

2) More renewable energy outside the district heating areas

3) More electricity from more wind turbines

4) More biogas

5) More electric cars

6) BornBioFuel - new sources of energy

7) Bioethanol for transport

8) Save electricity

9) Reduce heating bills

11) Information and consultancy

12) More coordination and coorperation

A number of the Energy Strategy's actions are ready to be implemented, wholly or partly. Other actions can be launched by initiating the planning and detailed studies. The launch of several actions simultaneously is expected to generate the greatest possible synergy and motivating force for conversion.
