Bornholm aims to become a 100% carbon-neutral island based on sustainable and renewable energy. The goal is formulated in a vision we call Bright Green Island.
According to the Bright Green Island vision, Bornholm seeks to become an attractive, 100% green island, which is responsible for its actions – environmentally and ethically. Bright Green Island also expresses our wish to exemplify how an entire community can become carbon neutral and our conviction that Bornholm has something to contribute in overcoming the climate-related challenges facing the world today.
Such a radical transformation of an entire community of 43,000 inhabitants demands action. More than 24% of the island’s energy is already generated from renewable sources. Looking at our power supply alone, 33% is generated by wind power.
Our vision is realistic because it combines one of the most ambitious energy strategies in Europe with a strong public–private partnership, the involvement of citizens via projects and campaigns, and large-scale national and international research projects.
Not least, it also involves the development and implementation of energy-efficient solutions, and a business plan which ensures that the transformation will be economically viable.
Bornholm is on its way to becoming a carbon neutral community, and we want to share with others the knowledge we have gained along the way. We welcome you to the island where the future is bright, 100% green and sustainable.
